Freshmen parade through downtown in costumes designed by their seniors, with tin cans tied to their ankles. It is the noisiest parade in the country.
At the end of the parade, by the river, godparents baptise their godchildren with Mondego water, the ritual of entry into the Academy.
Students receive the insignia of their faculty, in the colours that stay with them until Queima das Fitas.
